The Text: Cast of Characters

Marjorie Harvey, wealthy young socialite, adored by many men but sought after by Warren McIntyre. She plays with his emotions and spurns his attempts at devotion.

Bernice, cousin to Marjorie. She is visiting for the summer, but finds herself socially awkward among Marjorie's friends. She is a beautiful girl, but a "poor conversationalist." With the "help" of Marjorie, she becomes a social butterfly, eventually outshining Marjorie herself.

Warren McIntyre, beau of Marjorie. An attractive and amiable young man who "casually" attends Yale. He "worships" Marjorie, but becomes very jealous of her other lovers. Warren becomes enamored with Bernice for a short time; when she bobs her hair, he immediately loses all interest.

Mrs. Harvey/Aunt Josephine, Marjorie's mother, to whom Marjorie complain about Bernice's social hopelessness. In Marjorie's opinion, Mrs. Harvey fails to understand the importance of social skills.

G. Reece Stoddard, a "most desirable and distinguished young bachelor" who takes an interest in Bernice after her witty comments at a dinner party.

Charley Paulson, a young man who lacks "height, beauty, and social shrewdness" whom Bernice is seated next to at the dinner party. Bernice's feigns interest in him to attract other boys.

Otis Ormonde, a young man who gets "stuck" dancing with awkward Bernice but later becomes smitten with her.


Draycott Deyo, dances with Bernice. She is unaware that he is entering the ministry, and tells him a flirtatious tale about her bathing habits. One of her many social disasters.


Mrs. Deyo, believes bobbed hair is an "abomination." After bobbing her hair, Bernice discovers that Mrs. Deyo is hosting a dance in her honor the following evening.
